Project In-SPA-ration Inspires and Pampers Women at Maryland Shelter

Shepherd�s Cove, one of the largest emergency women and children�s shelter in Prince George�s County, Md., was recently �transformed into an oasis of rejuvenation and relaxation,� thanks to an event planned by Maryland natives Brittney and Ashley Drakeford.

Tagged as a pre-Mother�s Day celebration, the Drakeford sisters hosted Project In-SPA-ration, a community sponsored spa day for female residents on May 6 at the Shepherd�s Cove shelter.

Forty women, from ages 6 to 67, volunteered their time to cater to 30 residents at the housing facility managed by United Communities Against Poverty.

Brittney Drakeford told the AFRO that the idea for Project In-SPA-ration evolved from the �beauty nights� that she and her sister, Ashley, used to share with their mother, Sharon Drakeford, who passed away in 2004 due to complications from pulmonary Sarcoidosis.

Sharon was a frequent volunteer at Shepherd�s Cove before she died and often brought her daughters and younger relatives to the shelter to volunteer. Now Brittney and Ashley will continue to honor their mother by serving the shelter as she once did.

�Many women are fortunate enough to be able to de-stress and refocus their energy with time at the spa with friends or at a beauty parlor,� Ashley said. �Project In-SPA-ration is an early mother�s day gift in remembrance of our mom, for the women at the shelter. We wanted to share our �beauty night� experience with others.�

The women who participated in the event were pampered with nail treatments by Manicures-n-Motion, a Washington-D.C. based, chemical-free mobile nail salon.

They also received facials by Mary Kay Beauty Consultants, and had their make-up and hair styled by Royal Designs. The ladies also received spiritual fitness from Gethsemane United Methodist Church�s First Lady Margaret Gaines. Gift bags were also donated by Girl Scout Troops 6771 and 6772, Sephora of Annapolis and local chapters of Swings Phi Swing Sisterhood.

�It was a pleasure to share with the ladies at the shelter yesterday,� said Jesse Alexander, a Mary Kay consultant and retired career counselor from P.G. County Community College. �We were honored to be apart of this event.�
